| Usages | poor microcirculation, inflammation, or vascular problems |
Pentoxifylline is used in dogs, cats, and horses (and sometimes in large animals) for conditions involving poor microcirculation, inflammation, or vascular problems. Some of the common veterinary uses include:
| Species | Conditions / Applications |
|---|---|
| Dogs & Cats | Vasculitis (skin blood vessel inflammation), ulcerative dermatosis (e.g. in Collies, Shelties), ear margin necrosis, cutaneous lupus, frostbite, erythematous/ischemic skin lesions, dermatomyositis, contact allergies, atopic dermatitis. |
| Horses | Laminitis, navicular disease, improvement of blood flow in hoof problems; also in systemic conditions where circulation is compromised. |
| Other Uses | Thromboembolic events, endotoxic shock or septic conditions (where improving tissue perfusion may help) in some species. |
Because this is extended-release 400 mg human formulation being used extra‑label, dosages vary by species, size, and condition. Below are general guidelines, but veterinary supervision and adjustment are essential.
| Species | Typical Dose Range |
|---|---|
| Dogs | ~ 10‑25 mg/kg PO every 12‑24 hours, depending on severity and condition. |
| Cats | A fixed dose e.g. 100 mg every 12 hours has been used. |
| Horses & Large Animals | Varies greatly; often based on body weight, with adjustments for severity of disease. Sometimes 10 mg/kg or similar, but less data is available. |
The extended‑release 400 mg tablet should be given orally, usually with food to prevent gastric upset.
Duration: may require several weeks for effect (2‑4 weeks or more); in chronic conditions may be continued for months.
Off‑label Use: Not specifically approved in many countries for veterinary use — always your vet should oversee.
Common side effects: GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), reduced appetite, restlessness or agitation.
More serious / rare: Possible bleeding risk, hypotension, effects in animals with liver or kidney disease, risk in animals that are prone to seizures.
Avoid or use with caution in pregnant or lactating animals.
Possible drug interactions: with anticoagulants, other xanthine derivatives, drugs affecting blood flow or inflammatory response
