Deferoxamine Mesylate Injection is a medication mainly used to remove excess iron or aluminum from the body. It works by binding (chelating) these metals so they can be excreted in urine or bile.
Main uses 🩸 Iron overload (most common use)Used in patients who have too much iron in the body, such as:
Thalassemia major
Sickle cell disease
Patients receiving frequent blood transfusions
Acute iron poisoning (especially in children)
In patients with chronic kidney disease, especially those on dialysis
Removes excess aluminum that can cause bone disease or neurological problems
Injection: intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), or subcutaneous (SC)
Dose depends on the condition and patient’s iron levels
Pain or swelling at injection site
Nausea, vomiting
Low blood pressure (with rapid IV use)
Visual or hearing disturbances (with long-term use)
Requires regular monitoring of iron levels
Long-term use should be supervised by a healthcare professional
Not effective for iron deficiency anemia
