Deferoxamine Mesylate Injection is a medication mainly used to remove excess iron or aluminum from the body. It works by binding (chelating) these metals so they can be excreted in urine or bile.

Main uses 🩸 Iron overload (most common use)

Used in patients who have too much iron in the body, such as:

  • Thalassemia major

  • Sickle cell disease

  • Patients receiving frequent blood transfusions

  • Acute iron poisoning (especially in children)

🧠 Aluminum toxicity
  • In patients with chronic kidney disease, especially those on dialysis

  • Removes excess aluminum that can cause bone disease or neurological problems

How it is given
  • Injection: intravenous (IV), intramuscular (IM), or subcutaneous (SC)

  • Dose depends on the condition and patient’s iron levels

Common side effects
  • Pain or swelling at injection site

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Low blood pressure (with rapid IV use)

  • Visual or hearing disturbances (with long-term use)

Important notes
  • Requires regular monitoring of iron levels
